High Adventure Resource Management Training Course

Camp John J. Barnhardt

Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday, September 6-7-8-9, 2013

Course Description:

  • Powder Horn is for all youth and adult leaders interested in developing a high-adventure program within their home units.
  • Powder Horn promotes creative planning for action and adventure.
  • Powder Horn safely introduces participants to fun and challenging outdoor activitieswith the guidance of expert consultants from outside of Scouting.
  • Powder Horn provides an introduction to the resources necessary to successfully offer a variety of high adventure experiences to older Boy Scouts and Venturers.

Course Schedule:

-- The minimum course size is 20 participants, and the maximum is 36 participants.

-- The course will be begin at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 6 and conclude at 5:00 PM on Monday, September 9. This will meet the minimum requirement of at least three full days, as required by BSA standards.

-- At least 12 different electives must be presented during any given course

-- Participants are required to attend a minimum of 10 electives to earn the Powder Horn.

Our course will present 2 electives on Friday night, options for 10 electives on Saturday, options for 10 electives on Sunday, and offsite visits to 4 venues on Monday. Participants will divide into crews of 6 and rotate every 1 to 1.5 hours to elective stations during Saturday and Sunday, with group sessions covering other electives at meals and in the evenings.

Participants who attend 10 electives will receive the Powder Horn silver medal device to be worn on the left shirt pocket.

Cancellation Policy: There is a non-refundable $50 charge to cover registration expenses. Once registration fees have been paid, an individual may become ill or otherwise be unable to attend the event. Since the event has already incurred expenses related to camp staff, food, etc., not all fees are refundable. All requests for funds must be in writing and submitted to and received by the Central North Carolina Council on or before the planned date of the event (letters may be submitted at check-in of the event).
