LIFEGUARDING       

BSA and ARC certification will be offered

 

Purpose - To teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries.

Cost – The cost of $150.00 must be received by the council office in advance of the class and includes all materials, housing and food for the course.  This course will be offered to members of the 2012 Camp John J. Barnhardt staff at a cost of $75.

Prerequisites – The following must be demonstrated prior to acceptance to the class

              1.        All particioants are required to be at least 15 years of age as of May 25, 2012.

2.       Submit written evidence of fitness for swimming activities (signed health history).

3.       Successfully complete the BSA swim test

4.       Immediately after completing the BSA swim test swim 450 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, including at least 100 yards each of the following strokes in good form: front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke.  Swim goggles are allowed.

5.       Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.

6.       Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.  Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.  Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.   Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water.  Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

7.       Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the value of behaving in a professional manner. 
  2. Learn how to identify behaviors of a swimmer, distressed swimmer and an active or passive drowning victim. 
  3. Understand the components of an emergency action plan and how to activate it. 
  4. Understand the general procedures for an emergency occurring in the water or on land. 
  5. Demonstrate how to perform equipment-based rescues. 
  6. Learn how to provide first aid and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies. 
  7. Learn how to recognize and care for possible head, neck or back injuries. 

Length - The course will begin on Friday, May 25 at 6:00pm and will conclude on Monday, May 28 prior to 6:00pm.  Students are required to stay at Camp Barnhardt for the entirety of the class.

Certification Requirement

  1. Attend all class sessions. 
  2. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities. 
  3. Demonstrate competency in the three final skill scenarios. 
  4. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the three sections of the final written exam.  

Electronic student manuals will be issued the first week in May to those students who have paid the course fee.  Applications must be completed on line at the council website by May 7.  Students are required to read the manuals prior May 25.

 

If available, bring a computer with the student manual to class.

Cancellation Policy: Once registration fees have been paid, an individual may become ill or otherwise be unable to attend the event. Since the event has already incurred expenses related to camp staff, food, etc., not all fees are refundable. All requests for funds must be in writing and submitted to the Central North Carolina Council on or before the planned date of the event (letters may be submitted at check-in of the event).
